Note: Striped regency back has excellent period posture and no gaposis with buttons. I suspect the gapping problem is due in part to modern slouching.
For even more fun, have a book of Regency fashion plates on hand, like the blue Ackerman Dover reproductions, and make note of the various attitudes. Nailing a known period pose — like Holbein’s Henry VIII with legs wide, arms akimbo — can make a portrait pop. In a group of moderns with Kodak smiles, however, you will look like a Lemon Lady if you are sternly Victorian.
